When April comes, the dogwoods reveal themselves. In several states of the East and South, the lovely blooms of the dogwoods dot the landscape every spring. The Great Smoky Mountains are among the best places to photograph them, and this was the last of over a dozen dogwood images I made there on one trip. What appear to be white flower petals are actually white bracts—modified leaves growing around the base of the actual flower. In gardens, they are sometimes pink. Often, as here, the blooms resemble a great swarm of butterflies.
