This is far up the Alaska Highway, in British Columbia. From the Canadian border near Vancouver to the border with Alaska, it is more than 2,200 miles by road, and in 1980, 1,500 miles of it was gravel. It took us fifty hours to drive the length of British Columbia, at a reasonably high speed. B.C. is vast and very wild in appearance and it made me wonder why so many people want to get to Alaska for a look around when B.C. is closer. I first set this image up in a way similar to the final result and, just before I was ready, the wind blew and all the grass flopped over from the left to the right, annihilating my composition. I had to do the arrangement you see here in a hurry, because the thin, high clouds that softened the light were moving away for good. I made this, and then a second exposure. Only the first one had good light and sufficiently minimal movement in the grass.
